Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. Located 445 miles north of Yangon on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, the city has a population of one and half million, and is the capital of Mandalay Region. The last King and Queen of Myanmar lived in the Royal Palace with the eight mile moat surrounding the Palace walls. The King (Thebaw) was exiled to Indea and never returned to Myanmar but died in exile.
