The railway line from Mandalay to Lashio in Shan State. The line climbs from the hot river plains via two zig zags to Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) which sits at 3,605 feet. Here the train has several carriages and an extra van added to its consist. Pyin Oo Lwin was the summer capital of Burma during the British Raj in order for the white administration to escape the heat/humidity of Rangoon (Yangon). Tourists from mostly Germany, France and Italy join the train here for Hsipaw in the cooler part of the morning.
